Worth A Thousand Words
We've just redesigned our online picture collection, Wisconsin Historical Images, making it easier than ever to find what you want among our 12,000 photographs. The new interface makes it easy to see photographs, posters and other visual materials documenting every time period in North American history and hundreds of topics important to the history of Wisconsin. You can search by keyword, subject, location or photographer to find just the right image for your home, office or publication.
Now you can easily place an order online for a high-quality reproduction. Once you select a picture, the order form walks you through choices of quantity, size, finish and delivery method. And you can order more than one image at a time using the shopping cart feature.
Of course, you don't have to buy anything. The redesign allows you to browse almost limitlessly, or to focus on special interests. For example, Featured Collections groups images by major photographers or by important subjects. These collections currently include people such as Wisconsin Dells photographer H. H. Bennett and aviator Howard Hughes, as well as topics such as politics in Wisconsin or the catastrophic fire that destroyed Wisconsin's state Capitol in 1904. Coming soon will be special sections on the circus, bird's-eye views and Paul Vanderbilt — the Historical Society's first curator of photography and a great landscape photographer in his own right. You can also scroll down the list of hundreds of subject headings and retrieve groups of related pictures with a single click.
The new design makes it easy to stay up to date as we add dozens of new photos every week. Those who visit often will want to check the drop-down menu to see those we added in the past day, week or month. An even better way to keep up with new additions is to sign up for our e-mail newsletter by clicking Get the News. We publish monthly updates highlighting major additions to the site, such as the January addition of 42 watercolors by Franz Hölzlhuber (1826-1898), an Austrian visitor to the U.S. between 1856 and 1860.
Whether you're hunting for that perfect picture for the office wall, need an illustration for a magazine or book, or are simply poking through hundreds of historical images in search of the bizarre, the new Wisconsin Historical Images is sure to please.
