WHS Press Sesquicentennial Celebration

Triplets celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the WHS Press

The year 2005 marks the 150th anniversary of the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. With that first volume, the Press began its commitment to connecting the people of Wisconsin and the Midwest with their past while illuminating the importance of history in the present. In recent years the WHS Press has concentrated on creating books that appeal to a wider and more varied audience: lively narratives about interesting people and events; fresh and engaging explorations of well-worn topics; stories that speak to our regional community but also reach across borders to new readers. Books such as At the Creation, about the early days of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle, and Ringlingville USA, an in-depth study of the beginnings of the Ringling Brothers Circus, showcase Wisconsin’s unique economic past. The People of Wisconsin Series along with Patty Loew’s popular Indian Nations of Wisconsin focus on the diverse population of the state. Books, posters, and curriculum guides on immigration, Native Americans, archaeology, and industry bring the state’s history to life for Wisconsin schoolchildren.

Throughout the year, the Press will be honoring its anniversary with events around Madison and throughout the state. Kicking off the festivities is a Celebration of 150 Years of Publishing at the Madison West Barnes & Noble on Sunday, April 10, 1:00 p.m. Meet and mingle with WHS Press authors, including Terry Frei, Jerry Apps, and Patty Loew and help support this tradition of publishing excellence. A portion of the day’s sales will benefit the WHS Press.
