Forty-Four Young Historians Bound for Nationals

students awaiting results at the State Finals of National History Day, April 30, Madison, Wisconsin
Forty-four of Wisconsin's best and brightest middle and high school history scholars will represent the state at National History Day's national contest in June after presenting the findings of their yearlong research projects at the state finals in Madison on Saturday, April 30. The 44 national finalists will go on to present their National History Day projects at the national event in College Park, Maryland, June 12-16.

Some 350 middle and high school students from across Wisconsin gathered at the Wisconsin Historical Society in Madison for the state finals of the National History Day program. Participating students worked for months to create historical research projects on an enormous variety of topics connected to the program's 2005 theme, "Communication in History: The Key to Understanding." They presented their work in the form of documentaries, museum-style exhibits, dramatic performances, papers and Web sites. Students demonstrated incredible creativity in selecting topics for their research. Projects examined the historical significance of everything from a Civil War heroine to "I Love Lucy" and communicating through Punk Rock music.

You are invited to share in the adventures of National History Day's "Team Wisconsin" from home by reading their online journal as they present their projects to national judges and explore the Washington D.C. area. Watch this Web site for more news on "Team Wisconsin" in June.

To get involved with National History Day in Wisconsin as a volunteer at next year's events, e-mail state coordinator Emma Starzewski. Educators who would like more information about how to work with National History Day can find curriculum materials and contact information on our Web site.

The Wisconsin Historical Society congratulates all 6,000 Wisconsin students who were engaged in National History Day projects this year!
