The Perfect Book for Tree and Nature Lovers
It seems that anyone you ask has a story about a tree, whether it was a tree they climbed as a child, one they carved their initials in as a teenager, or one they planted as an adult. Trees are all around us, but we generally take them for granted until someone points out their importance.
Author and arborist R. Bruce Allison does just that in his book published this month by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press, Every Root an Anchor: Wisconsin’s Famous and Historic Trees. By showcasing some of the state’s oldest, most noteworthy, or most meaningful trees, he shows us the importance of these living things that surround us. Drawing on the work of early environmentalists such as Increase Lapham and John Muir, Allison relates the stories of these trees as only someone with a passion for nature can.
From syrup-producing maples to lovely oaks to hearty pines, trees are all around us. They have played an important, though often overlooked, role throughout Wisconsin’s History. They have been planted to honor veterans, used as surveyor's tools, and even used in an attempt to break a world record! They have become intertwined in our lives, whether we are consciously aware of it or not.
