Robert Marion La Follette, Sr., unquestionably Wisconsin's best known political leader, was born on June 14, 1855 — 150 years ago — in the town of Primrose in rural Dane County. La Follette went on to serve Wisconsin as congressman (1885-1891), governor (1901-1906), and U.S. senator (1906-1925), and he was the founder of the state's Progressive political tradition. Wisconsin is not alone in its admiration for La Follette; in 1955 the United States Senate voted him one of the five most outstanding members in its history. In celebration of his sesquicentennial anniversary, the Wisconsin Historical Society offers a selection of more than 100 images documenting La Follette's life and legacy.
