Robert M. La Follette: Personal Artifacts of a Public Figure

A case exhibit on display from Flag Day, June 14, through July 9, 2005, pays tribute to Robert M. La Follette, Sr. — one of the most iconic figures in Wisconsin history. In recognition of his birth 150 years ago on June 14, 1855, and his death 80 years ago on June 18, 1925, the Wisconsin Historical Museum presents this exhibit of selected objects relating to his life. As governor (1901-1906), he spearheaded a progressive reform movement that earned Wisconsin a national reputation for honest government dedicated to the public good over special interests. As United States senator (1906-1925), La Follette fought corrupt practices, championed government regulation of business and commerce, and promoted conservation. He opposed U.S. involvement in World War I and in 1924 ran unsuccessfully for president. To this day, Wisconsinites have praised La Follette's outstanding legacy. Visit this exhibition and our permanent exhibits to learn more about Robert La Follette and his accomplishments. See the flag that draped La Follette's coffin, one of many objects in our Museum's collections.
