Society Collaborates on History Channel Grant

Panther Spirit Mound image by Andrew Napier
A 'Save our History' grant from The History Channel intended to restore and preserve an endangered Native American panther effigy mound in Mauston, Wisconsin, has led to a collaborative partnership among several groups with a stake in safeguarding the site, including the Wisconsin Historical Society. The grant went to the Juneau County Historical Society and Olson Middle School in Mauston. Joining in their effort to document and catalog the 1,000-year-old effigy mound are the Wisconsin Historical Society's Burial Sites Preservation Program, UW-La Crosse's Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center, the Ho-Chunk Nation, and Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources.
