Discover Underwater Shipwrecks off the Coast of Wisconsin

Bow of the Ocean Wave
Follow a chronicle of shipwreck exploration as underwater archaeologists from the Wisconsin Historical Society examine several shipwrecks in Lake Michigan throughout 2005. Working in cooperation with the Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association, the Great Lakes Shipwreck Research Foundation, the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, the University of Wisconsin Sea Grant Institute, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Great Lakes WATER Institute, WHS underwater archaeologists describe their work in daily postings of journal entries and photographs. The daily updates include explanations of each step of the fieldwork.

This year’s fieldwork concentrates on scow schooners, with the exploration and documentation of the scows Iris in Jackson Harbor, the Ocean Wave off Whitefish Point, and the Tennie & Laura off Port Washington. Other field projects include documentation of the schooner Daniel Lyons off Algoma, and East Carolina University’s Program in Maritime Studies will return this fall to document the steam barge Joys in Sturgeon Bay. Also watch for the installation of several new Maritime Trails Markers throughout Wisconsin.
