Before Carbon Fiber — Early Biking in Wisconsin

Kruegar Children with Bicycles. WHI 23911
WHI 23911
Wisconsin cyclists have been braving mud, cows, and automobiles for well over a century, and documents about their passion are represented in the Society's digital collections. By 1892 Wisconsin riders had begun publishing their own journal, The Pneumatic. All its issues published in that year, including drawings, photos, advertisements, and news from cyclists around the state, are included at Turning Points in Wisconsin History. So, too are curiosities, such as this bicycle made from bamboo that was produced in Milwaukee in 1897. Dozens of photos of bicycles old and new can be found at Wisconsin Historic Images. A short history of bicycling in Wisconsin is also available from the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation (PDF).
