Living Large Like Laura Ingalls Wilder

Children playing at Old World Wisconsin
Scenes and characters from Laura Ingalls Wilder's children's classic, Little House in the Big Woods, will jump out of the book's pages and into the historic setting of Old World Wisconsin on Friday, July 22, during Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Day. Taking a new approach this year, the outdoor living history museum will focus on a single book in the beloved author's Little House series — her first novel about living with her family in a log cabin nestled deep in the woods near Pepin, Wisconsin. If you go, expect to find yourself immersed in a world populated by Laura lookalikes outfitted in the fashion of the author's day, complete with long dresses and sunbonnets. And they'll be engaged in many of the same kinds of work and play that would have occupied the time of Laura Ingalls Wilder and her sister Mary, from quilting, making bread and butter and washing clothes to listening to fiddle music and fanciful stories like Pa used to tell. An old-fashioned spelling bee a lookalike costume contest will garner prizes for the winners. Golden Guernsey Dairy proudly sponsors the event.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Day makes a great opportunity for family fun. Pack a picnic lunch or choose from the lunch menu at the Clausing Barn Restaurant. And don't miss an opportunity to shop the outdoor museum's souvenir stand and the museum store where you will find items such as prairie bonnets, historic games like hoops and graces, and an assortment of other "Laura" mementos. You might also want to set aside a day next year to take part in Laura Ingalls Wilder Children's Day when Old World Wisconsin features the Wilder classic, Little House on the Prairie.
