See Wisconsin's Biggest Civil War Reenactment
The largest Civil War reenactment spectacle in Wisconsin, the 15th annual Civil War Weekend at Wade House, takes shape Saturday and Sunday, September 24-25, in the wooded hills and dales of the 1860s-era historic site. Each year Civil War reenactors from throughout the nation flock to the former stagecoach inn's sprawling grounds to set up Confederate and Union encampments, march, drill and — at 2 each afternoon — engage in a full-scale battle reenactment. This year's event will feature all the action-packed drama of past reenactments, complete with demonstrations of rifle and artillery fire, although the important role played by noncombatants and caregivers will provide the focus for the event.
All day, both days, visitors can expect to meet and mingle with Civil War-era nurses, dentists, doctors, morticians and other noncombatants who played such a key role in caring for soldiers and civilians alike. Stop in at the Wade House stagecoach inn, and you'll find the Christian Commission and the U.S. Sanitary Commission hard at work gathering and packing supplies for soldiers at the front.
