Elephants Contribute to Circus World Fund-Raising Campaign

Elephants on parade in Baraboo
The elephants who entertained visitors at Circus World Museum in Baraboo this summer have left the site for the 2005 season, but they may have left behind a commodity that will help contribute to Circus World's ongoing fund-raising campaign — their manure. It turns out that home gardeners prize elephant manure for its unusually high nutrient content. So what is a cash-strapped museum to do with piles and piles of elephant manure? Sell it, of course!

On Saturday, September 10, in exchange for a donation to the museum's ongoing campaign to raise funds to complete the 2005 season and begin planning for its future, home gardeners and others will be welcome to help themselves to a sizeable quantity of elephant manure. From 7:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Circus World Museum staff will be on hand at the back entrance to the site, at the end of Lynn Street, to accept donations and to assist those arriving to collect and carry away the elephant manure. People should bring their own shovels, pails, trash cans or other suitable tools and containers to collect the manure. The museum will have a skid loader available to assist those wanting to haul away manure by the truck load.

"While we have not established a minimum donation amount, we would hope that people understand that this museum needs assistance from the public to remain a vibrant entertainment venue and the steward of one of the most important circus history collections in the world," said Renee Boldt, president of the Circus World Museum Foundation Board of Directors. "No reasonable donation will be refused," she said.

Circus World Museum is a National Historic Landmark property owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society and operated by Circus World Museum Foundation under a lease-management agreement. The museum is the original site of Ringlingville, the Ringling Bros. Circus winter headquarters. Its holdings include a spectacular collection of circus history memorabilia, business records, posters, and the world's largest collection of circus wagons.

Anyone with questions about the elephant manure fund-raiser should contact Circus World Museum at 608-356-8341 or by e-mail. See additional information on how to make a donation to Circus World Museum.
