Celebrating 150 Years of Good Books
The 2005 Wisconsin Book Festival ended with a bang on October 17 as Wisconsin Historical Society Press authors, readers, Society members and staff, and other friends of state history gathered to celebrate the Society Press's sesquicentennial of publishing.
As Wisconsin's oldest book publisher, there was a lot to commemorate. The evening's highlight was Historical Society Director Ellsworth H. Brown's presentation of more than a hundred Society Press books — its complete catalog — to the Arcadia Free Public Library, winner of the Press's Big Book Giveaway. Jane Abts, who nominated the library for the award, and Carol Krett, the library's director, accepted the books from Brown.
The Society received more than 1,300 nominations of public and school libraries for the random drawing. To add to the evening's charm, in a fitting coincidence, the community served by the library also is celebrating its sesquicentennial this year.
