Historic Farms Celebrate the Autumn Harvest
The historic farmhouses and outbuildings of Old World Wisconsin, set against a backdrop of vibrant autumn colors and crisp fall weather, provide the perfect canvas for a festive reliving of Autumn on the Farms in late 19th-century Wisconsin. This weekend-long event gives visitors a taste of how Wisconsin's rural settlers prepared for the approach of winter. On several of the outdoor museum's farmsteads, the sights and sounds of a bygone era will again be commonplace — a steam-powered sawmill, teams of draft horses working the fields, and antique farm machinery bringing in the fall harvest. Demonstrations of crafting traditions, early food preservation techniques such as meat smoking, and horseradish making will help to re-create the air of fall on the farm more than a century ago.
In historic Caldwell Farmers' Club Hall, representatives of Foremost Farms, the event's sponsor, will offer samples of delicious and old-fashioned dairy recipes, demonstrate milking by hand and churning butter, and will showcase a variety of dairy memorabilia. Weston's Antique Apple Orchards will also sample and sell their heirloom varieties of apples and apple-baked goods — items you won't find on grocery store shelves. And, for the first time, the historic Thomas General Store in the 1870s crossroads village will sell old-fashioned pencils, slates, tin cups and toothbrushes.
