Wisconsin Book Festival: October 13-17
The fourth annual Wisconsin Book Festival — a five-day celebration of books, literacy, and literature — will be held in and around downtown Madison October 13-17, 2005. Since the festival's inception, the Wisconsin Historical Society Press has been a contributing sponsor, providing venue space for many events and hosting programs that highlight our own remarkable authors and publications. This year the Press continues its commitment to the Wisconsin Book Festival, hosting myriad events at both the Wisconsin Historical Museum, 30 North Carroll Street, and at the Society's headquarters building, 816 State Street.
On Friday, October 14, several Press authors will read from their works as part of the Wisconsin Publishers' Showcase held at Memorial Library, 728 State Street. Hosted by the Wisconsin Center for the Book and Woodrow Hall Editions, this "Book Bash" will highlight Wisconsin's literary heritage. Stop by Memorial Library Room 126 to hear Press authors Jerry Apps at 3:30 pm, R. Bruce Allison at 7 pm, and Richard Carlton Haney at 7:15 pm.
Celebrate the launch of the Press's new Badger Biographies series for readers age 7 to 12 on Saturday, October 15, at 1 pm at the Wisconsin Historical Museum. The first book in the series, Mai Ya's Long Journey, tells the story of a young Hmong girl's immigration to Wisconsin. Author Sheila Cohen will describe how her experiences as an English as a Second Language teacher, and her relationship with Mai Ya and her family, inspired her to write this unique book.
Also on October 15, WHS Press offers a treat for tree-lovers: join author and arborist R. Bruce Allison at 3 p.m. at the Wisconsin Historical Museum for a brief talk about his book Every Root an Anchor: Wisconsin's Famous and Historic Trees followed by an autumn tree walk on the state Capitol grounds. Take a tour with an expert and gaze up at some of Wisconsin's most beautiful trees in all their autumn glory (come rain or shine).
As the grand finale to this year's Wisconsin Book Festival, join the Wisconsin Historical Society Press at 7 p.m. on Monday, October 17, for our 150th Anniversary Celebration. This historic event will celebrate the writing and retelling of our state's history and will honor all Wisconsin Historical Society Press and Wisconsin Magazine of History writers, past and present. Speakers include Jerry Apps, Brett Barker, Patty Loew and Richard Zeitlin.
The WHS Press will also commemorate the occasion with the Big Book Giveaway. A complete set of all Press books in print will be donated to the Arcadia Public Library of Arcadia, Wisconsin. The celebration includes a reception and begins at 7 pm in the Wisconsin Historical Society auditorium and lobby, 816 State Street.
All featured Press books will be available for purchase at Wisconsin Book Festival events or from the Wisconsin Historical Museum Store.
