Funding for Historic Preservation Conference

With the financial assistance of $279,000 from WisDOT's Transportation Enhancements program, the Ozaukee County Historical Society rehabilitated this historic property for use as its museum and archive.

Does your group have a depot, a gas station, a bridge or an old stagecoach hotel that you'd like to restore? Does your local historical society want to develop an educational program for a local school? Are you just interested in finding out what funding might be available for your history or historic preservation project? Then you should attend the Wisconsin Historical Society's upcoming training program "Funding for History" on Friday, February 17. The program is free and open to the public and will be held at the Society's headquarters building at 816 State Street. For a full agenda please see our brochure (PDF, 45KB).

This all-day program will include a speaker from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to discuss its Local Transportation Enhancements Program. This funding program has rescued dozens of historic transportation facilities such as stagecoach hotels, depots, gas stations, truss bridges and lighthouses throughout the state by providing millions of dollars for their rehabilitation.

Jeanne Lambin of the Wisconsin Field Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation will discuss the National Trust's various grant programs. She will also discuss the Jeffris Family Foundation grant program. The Jeffris Family Foundation has also provided millions of dollars for the rehabilitation of a wide range of Wisconsin's most historic structures, from the Plummer Headframe in Iron County and the Stoughton Opera House to the Milwaukee Lake Shore and Western Coach #63 at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum in North Freedom.

Daina Penkiunas will serve double duty by giving a presentation about the National Register of Historic Places, a program she administers for the Wisconsin Historical Society. In addition, Daina will present about the Society's new funding Web site that includes a searchable database of historic preservation funding sources.

Lastly the program will highlight a very successful preservation case study by the Juneau County Historical Society. Juneau County was one of two Wisconsin recipients of a grant from The History Channel's Save Our History program. The Juneau County Historical Society used its grant to restore the Panther Spirit Mound while at the same time providing educational programming to a local Mauston school.

If you plan to attend, R.S.V.P. with Rick Bernstein by Monday, February 13. Individual appointments may be available. If there is an issue you would like to discuss with a particular Society staff person, please contact Rick for assistance in arranging such a meeting.
