New Wisconsin Birth Records Index

Have you begun your family history yet? One of the best sources of genealogical information is a birth record, which often contains a person's place of birth, father's and mother's name, and siblings. We have just made your search for birth records one step easier with our Pre-1907 Wisconsin Birth Records Index. It was made by digitizing a 1970s microfiche index and expanding it with tens of thousands of delayed birth records, or births that were filed many years after the event. The Schoenleber Foundation of Milwaukee generously covered most of the conversion costs, and the Wisconsin State Genealogical Society graciously let us include their delayed birth records index. The result is free public access to information on more than 500,000 Wisconsin births.

You can search in a variety of ways — use just a last name or browse by county and year. Try various names and locations to find your Wisconsin ancestors. When you discover someone for whom you want a birth certificate, you can order a hard copy from us online. Members receive a 10-percent discount on each order.

We plan to add pre-1907 death and marriage indexes in the next few months, creating a comprehensive vital records index that will be entirely free and publicly searchable. Until the death and marriage indexes are available, you can request searches through our Wisconsin Genealogical Research Service.

Vital records are essential to family research, but there are other useful and interesting tools as well. We offer the Wisconsin Name Index, which leads to more than 150,000 obituaries, personal sketches, and other short biographies of Wisconsin people. And you can order copies of Wisconsin Civil War Records, which typically show the soldier's name, regiment, company, rank, and date of mustering (enrollment) into service. Many Civil War records also include a birthplace, age, residence, occupation, marital status, physical description, muster-out date and service notes. You may also find pictures of ancestors and their home towns at Wisconsin Historical Images.

Enjoy the index and happy searching!
