Wisconsin's History Is Now at Your Fingertips
You could read the more than 10,000 books and articles written on Wisconsin's history... or you could read these 10,000 words. A Short History of Wisconsin covers all of the major eras, events, themes, and people that have made Wisconsin what it is today. Keeping it short meant we had to leave out many details but key terms are linked to information available elsewhere on the Society's Web site so the answers to your burning questions are just a click away.
We have also provided sidebars about a handful of real people — some familiar like Bob La Follette and some unfamiliar like Byron Paine — whose lives and accomplishments made waves in their own time and may still touch your life today.
Organized into seven sections for easy digestion, the short history spans roughly 13,000 years of Wisconsin prehistory and recorded history, from the retreat of the last Ice Age glacier and the rise of sewer socialism to the resignation of Governor Tommy Thompson — it's all here. For more information on any topic or unfamiliar word, consult our online Dictionary of Wisconsin History.
Happy reading!
