Wisconsin's Olympic Speed Skaters, 1976-2006

Eric Heiden's Gold Medal and Peter Mueller skating

Wisconsin speed skaters have dominated the sport for the past 30 years, especially at the Olympics. With two of Wisconsin's top athletes, Casey FitzRandolph and Chris Witty, competing in speed skating events in this year's Torino Olympics, the Wisconsin Historical Museum is taking the opportunity to look at why the Badger state has mastered the events. Between 1976 and 2002, seven speed skaters born and raised in Wisconsin have brought home 13 medals, nine of them gold.

Skating for Gold features memorabilia from each of the seven athletes, including eight of the 13 medals won by Wisconsin speed skaters. Eric Heiden's five gold medals from the 1980 Olympics will be on public display for the first time ever, along with his skates and other items for a number of Wisconsin Olympians.

The exhibit will be available to the public now through March 25 at the Wisconsin Historical Museum on Capitol Square in Madison. You can also preview the exhibit online or take a more detailed look at one of Casey FitzRandolph's racing skins.
