45 Students Going to the National Competition
After completing this weekend's National History Day state competition, 45 students will represent Wisconsin at the national contest in College Park, Maryland, June 11-15. Some 400 middle and high school students from across the state gathered at the Wisconsin Historical Society headquarters in Madison on Saturday, April 29, for the National History Day (NHD) State Finals. Projects explored an incredible variety of topics, from "Fighting Bob" La Follette and Galileo Galilei to Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb, the "Angel of the Wisconsin Northwoods." Presentations included documentaries, museum-style exhibits, dramatic performances, written papers, and Web sites.
Participating students have worked for months to create historical research projects related to the program's 2006 theme, "Taking a Stand in History." Their projects have progressed through local and regional competitions to provide the students with the opportunity to participate in the state finals. The 45 finalists going on to the national event emerged from a field of 6,200 Wisconsin students who created NHD projects this year.
