Madison Post Office Dedicated to La Follette

Image of the La Follette mural

Music, fanfare and a new mural commemorating the life and times of Wisconsin's own "Fighting Bob" La Follette will be part of a ceremony dedicating Madison's Capitol Station Post Office in La Follette's honor on Saturday, June 17, at 11 a.m. Special guests will include U.S. Representative Tammy Baldwin, Madison Postmaster Robert Cavinder, and members of the La Follette family. They will all take part in the ceremonial tribute to the former Wisconsin governor, U.S. representative and senator at the Post Office on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Musicians from La Follette High School will perform, and the U.S. Postal Service will introduce a special cancellation in honor of the occasion.

On view at the post office is a brand-new permanent mural display illustrating La Follette's life and times. The Wisconsin Historical Society organized, scripted and designed the display with financial support from The Capital Times Editor Dave Zweifel, attorney Ed Garvey and fightingbob.com. It features illustrations of La Follette photographs, drawings, documents, publications and artifacts from the Society's collections.

"Fighting Bob" La Follette left an indelible mark on state and national politics. In an era of political corruption and corporate power, he embodied the principles of American progressivism. La Follette's integrity, courage and dedication to public service became an inspiration for future generations of politicians from all parts of the political spectrum.

In 2005, the 150th anniversary of La Follette's birth, the U.S. Congress passed, and President Bush signed into law, a bill authored by Tammy Baldwin to dedicate Madison's Capitol Station Post Office to Robert M. "Fighting Bob" La Follette. Wisconsin's entire congressional delegation co-sponsored Baldwin's bill. The ceremony falls three days after La Follette's 151st birthday, June 14.
