Celebrate Midsummer at Old World, Pendarvis
Midsummer celebrations trace their roots to ancient times, predating Christianity. And though Christians eventually imbued summer solstice celebrations with religious significance, many of the ancient pagan customs associated with these festivities survive to this day. Two Wisconsin historic sites, Old World Wisconsin and Pendarvis, will commemorate the approach of the summer solstice by staging their own historical tributes to the traditions, rites and festivals of old.
On Saturday, June 17, Pendarvis will present its annual Midsummer Festival with a look back at the cultural contributions of Cornish immigrants who flocked to the Mineral Point area of territorial Wisconsin to mine its rich veins of lead ore. Later that evening, festivities continue with the Pendarvis Midsummer Pub Night, featuring live music and festive libations inside the cozy confines of the Kiddleywink Pub.
At Old World Wisconsin, also on Saturday, June 17, the Friends of Old World Wisconsin will host an evening celebration of Midsummer Magic. In true Wisconsin fashion, live music, samplings from some of the state's finest wineries, breweries, caterers, restaurants and specialty stores, along with carriage rides and a silent auction, combine for a magnificent salute to summer.
For an ethnic twist on the ancient holiday, mark Sunday, June 25, on your calendar. That's when Old World Wisconsin will re-create an authentic Swedish Midsommar Celebration with the help of the Swedish American Historical Society of Wisconsin. In genuine Scandinavian tradition, music and dancing around a festive majstang, or maypole, on Old World's Visitor Center green will provide the perfect setting for a present-day observance of an ancient, time-honored holiday.
