Adding Without Subtracting Symposium

American Exchange Bank, Madison. Built in 1871

Are you the owner of a historic building — or an architect or consultant who advises historic building owners? Are you a preservationist concerned about the integrity of historic buildings and neighborhoods? If so, please consider joining us for a daylong symposium featuring thought-provoking presentations by national experts and case studies from around Wisconsin about planning additions to historic properties and historically sensitive infill. Leaders in the field of historic preservation from New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and all across the nation will convene with local activists and design professionals at The Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, October 20.

The symposium, "Adding without Subtracting: Sensitive Design and Historic Properties," will explore the issue of appropriate design of additions to historic buildings and infill construction in historic districts. Columbia University's Paul Byard will present "Architecture's Argument: A Theory for Additions," and Steven W. Seemes of the University of Notre Dame will try to divine the "Future of the Past." Sharon Park of the National Park Service will explain and provide examples of successful implementation of the Secretary of the Interior's Standard's for Rehabilitation. Jim Draeger of the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office will explain how that office reviews additions to historic properties. Case studies of additions to a historic site, a historic church and a Main Street property will also be presented. Group discussion will be encouraged throughout the day, and the symposium will end with a group review of the day's presentations. Participants are also invited to stay for a guided tour of Milwaukee's Lower East Side immediately following the close of the symposium.

Registration may be open the day of the symposium if seats are still available, however advance registration is recommended to guarantee admission.

The symposium is sponsored by the Chicago-based Midwest Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and underwritten by a grant from the Jeffris Family Foundation of Janesville, Wisconsin.

Co-sponsors include: the Wisconsin Historical Society's Division of Historic Preservation-Public History; American Institute of Architects, Wisconsin Southeast Chapter; University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Architecture and Urban Planning; University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Design Council; American Planning Association, Wisconsin Chapter; Wisconsin Department of Commerce, Main Street Program; Wisconsin Association of Historic Preservation Commissions; Wisconsin Trust for Historic Preservation; and Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward Association. Continuing education credits will be available for architects.
