Love & Courtship — by Lamplight

A couple square dancing in one of Old World Wisconsin's historic barns

Old World Wisconsin will celebrate 19th-century rituals of love and courtship — by the warm glow of lamplight — during its annual Autumn Lamplight Tours on Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30 and October 6-7. The special after-hours interactive tours will run from 7-9 p.m. both weekends. The event will tell the stories of young 19th-century couples as they set out to embark on new lives together. Led by lamp carriers, participants will stroll between four farmsteads in Old World Wisconsin's German-Polish area, where they will witness a controversial engagement, dance at a wedding reception, and take part in an old-time shivaree — a custom brought to America by European immigrants in which participants bang on pots and generally engage in a noisy mock serenade for newlyweds. Another vignette will focus on concerns expressed by a recently married mother-to-be.

Admission to Autumn Lamplight Tours: Love & Courtship is $25 per person. For more information or to make reservations, contact Old World Wisconsin at 262-594-2798 or via e-mail.
