A September Sampler: Special Events Aplenty
From a tribute to America's first breed of horse and a celebration of Cornish culture in Wisconsin to an 1880s wedding and reception, Wisconsin's historic sites have a lineup of special events in store during September to suit many a varied taste. Old World Wisconsin, just 35 miles from Milwaukee in Waukesha County, honors Morgan horses on Saturday, September 16, during its Morgan Horse Day event that will give visitors an up-close look at this historic breed, how they were used in the past, and how they are used today.
Also on September 16, beside the banks of the Mississippi River, Stonefield in Cassville will conduct A Celebration of Rural Life by re-creating the small-town flavor of rural Wisconsin in 1900 with craft demonstrations, children's games and activities for the whole family.
The following weekend, in historic Mineral Point, Pendarvis will celebrate its Cornish heritage with its annual Kiddleywink Pub Night on Friday, September 22, featuring live music and pub games, followed by its Crowdy Crawn event on Saturday, September 23, in a quaint celebration of all things Cornish. The events coincide with Mineral Point's annual Cornish Festival featuring Celtic music, dancing and storytelling.
Another special event on September 23 will highlight 19th-century wedding traditions when Old World Wisconsin re-creates an 1880s Old World Wedding, complete with a bridal trousseau, a ceremony in historic St. Peter's Church, and an old-fashioned reception to follow. Preparations for the first of two wedding ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. in the crossroads village, with the wedding ceremony set to begin at 11 a.m. The wedding scenario will be repeated beginning at 1:30 p.m., with the ceremony scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
