Wisconsin's local history organizations know that fall means it is time once again to meet in Madison for the Annual Local History Convention. The annual convention, co-sponsored by the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Council for Local History, will take place November 10-11 with seminars to be held at the Wisconsin Historical Society headquarters and in the nearby University of Wisconsin's Memorial Union.

Convention attendees will have a variety of educational seminars to choose from on Friday in the areas of fund raising and computer technology. Those organizations looking to develop new fund-raising strategies will want to attend the panel discussion on grassroots fund raising, moderated by Dave Jankoski of the Stanley Historical Society, as well as a discussion of fund raising through publishing, moderated by Kathy Borkowski of the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. For those organizations that have always wanted to apply for a grant but did not know where to start, Dena Wortzel of the Wisconsin Humanities Council will present the basics of grant writing.

Computer technology seminars will focus on local historical organizations and the Web. If your society needs to develop a Web presence, then you may consider the seminar on the building and development of Web sites moderated by James Ellis, the Wisconsin Historical Society's Web site producer. Bob Shuster of the Fairwater Historical Society will follow with a discussion on using the Web to promote local history. Michael Edmonds and Jim Draeger of the Wisconsin Historical Society will then demonstrate the Society's online resources that allow you to search our collections for free and from any location. Those organizations thinking about digitizing their collections should not miss Sally Jacobs of Jacobs Archival Services, who will provide advice on avoiding common mistakes made when scanning photographs.

Saturday will take the Veterans Day holiday as its cue and feature a series of military-related speakers. Keynote speaker Professor Richard Carlton Haney of University of Wisconsin-Whitewater will discuss his book When is Daddy Coming Home?: An American Family during World War II, followed by Dan Joyce of the Kenosha Public Museum on Kenosha's Civil War Museum of the Midwest. Maureen Betz, of the Town of Byron Historical Society will discuss the local society's military veteran research project that uncovered more than 600 military veterans who once lived in Byron. The final speaker will be Bill S. Malone, professor emeritus of Southern music and culture at Tulane University. He will close the day with a luncheon presentation titled "Country Music and War."

Participants are encouraged to linger by attending a special preview of Wisconsin Public Television's Wisconsin Korean War Stories or by taking a guided tour of Madison's historic State Street or the University of Wisconsin campus, both led by the Madison Trust for Historic Preservation.

Registration for the convention will be open until Friday, November 3. Additional conference information is available online or by contacting Rick Bernstein at 608-264-6583 or via e-mail.
