The Wisconsin Book Festival is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year, and the Wisconsin Historical Society Press has an exciting lineup of new books and accomplished authors appearing at the event. The five-day celebration of books, literacy and learning will be held in and around downtown Madison starting today, October 18, and running through October 22. Madison isn't the only place to hear your favorite authors speak this year — book festivals will also be taking place in Edgerton, Eau Claire and Milwaukee the same weekend. And Milwaukee, in addition to playing host to some events, also plays a starring role in three of Society Press' new books: Cream City Chronicles, Silver Screens and A Recipe for Success: Lizzie Kander and her Cookbook.

Tonight at 7 o'clock at the Wisconsin Historical Museum, John Kaminski, Society Press author and series editor of the Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution, will discuss the series, focusing on the current New York volumes as well as his America's Founders Series chapbooks and The Quotable Jefferson.

Join Press author Larry Widen at Wauwatosa's The Little Read Book on Thursday, October 19, for the launch of Silver Screens: A Pictorial History of Milwaukee's Movie Theaters. Widen will also be in the auditorium at Society's headquarters on Saturday, October 21, at 2 p.m.

On Friday, October 20, Jerry Apps, author of Ringlingville USA, presents his new children's book Tents, Tigers and the Ringling Brothers, the latest offering in the Society Press' Badger Biographies series.

Press author Genni McBride honors Wisconsin women, both native and newcomers, on Saturday, October 21, when she discusses her book Women's Wisconsin: From Native Matriarchies to the New Millennium at A Room of One's Own.

That same day John Gurda, popular Sunday columnist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, takes us back through Milwaukee's colorful past when he shares his new book Cream City Chronicles: Stories of Milwaukee's Past at 6 p.m. at the Wisconsin Historical Museum.

Press author Jonathan Kasparek examines the life of the second son of the most famous Wisconsin progressive, Philip La Follette, in his new book Fighting Son: A Biography of Philip F. La Follette on Saturday, October 21, at 7 p.m. in the Society's auditorium.

Richard Haney, author of When is Daddy Coming Home? An American Family During World War II, will sign copies of his memoir during the Edgerton Book Festival at the Tri-County Community Center on Saturday, October 21, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Press author Jerry Apps will also be in attendance for book signings and a presentation.

Meet Jane de Broux, associate editor of the Wisconsin Magazine of History, and find out what it takes to write for the Society's magazine on Sunday, October 22, at noon at the Wisconsin Historical Museum during the Magazine Editors' Round Table.

And finally, on Sunday, October 22, Bob Birmingham will discuss his book Aztalan: Mysteries of an Ancient Indian Town at the Wisconsin Historical Museum at 3 p.m.

All featured Wisconsin Historical Society Press books will be available for purchase at Wisconsin Book Festival events or from the Wisconsin Historical Museum Store.
