Festive Tributes to Christmases Past

The dining room of the Villa Louis, decorated for the Christmas holidays, contrasted with Old World Wisconsin's Father Christmas

Two Wisconsin historic sites will ring in the holidays with a series of festive special events that celebrate Christmas as Wisconsinites did in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Villa Louis and Old World Wisconsin, each with their own rich and unique Christmas traditions to share with visitors, will reopen their doors during December for these special postseason festivities.

The recently restored rooms of Villa Louis will be decked out in their finest Victorian holiday splendor for the occasion. The elegant mansion was in its heyday during the 1890s and will turn back the clock to that decade for An 1890s Christmas Holiday on Saturday and Sunday, December 2-3 and December 9-10. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with special lamplight tours both Saturday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30.

You can see Old World Wisconsin by the warm glow of lamplight — and sample some historic recipes along the way — during two special Winter Lamplight tours from 6-9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, December 1-2 and December 8-9.

The Spirit of Christmas Past, with special emphasis on Finnish immigrant holiday traditions, will be the focus of celebrations from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, December 2-3 and December 9-10. For those who want to complete their ethnic Christmas experience with a festive Finnish feast, there will be Finnish Holiday Dinners on Saturday and Sunday, December 2-3, and December 9-10.

Old World Wisconsin will complete its holiday revelry with a Breakfast with Father Christmas from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 16, complete with face painting, balloons and old-fashioned goodies for all children. So mark your calendars and celebrate the season in historic fashion.
