Winter Wisconsin Magazine of History is Here

Take a break from the holiday madness with the newest issue of the Wisconsin Magazine of History, on newsstands and in mailboxes now. Here's a sneak peak.

In "Showdown in Chicago," author Jeff Bloodworth explores the new brand of progressivism that Eau Claire businessman Donald Peterson brought to Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Born during the war in Vietnam, this New Politics Liberalism redefined liberalism in Wisconsin and led to an epic clash at the convention between Wisconsin delegates and Chicago Mayor Richard Daley over the Vietnam War.

Stuart Stotts looks at the woman behind Wisconsin's traveling libraries in "A Thousand Little Libraries: Lutie Stearns, the Johnny Appleseed of Books." Although free libraries were gaining in popularity in the late 19th century, poor roads, bad weather and great distances kept books out of reach for many rural Wisconsin families. Librarian Lutie Stearns pledged to solve this problem and spent almost 20 years transporting books to every corner of Wisconsin.

Milwaukeeans of the early 1900s loved their alcohol, and saloons were a fixture of nearly every city neighborhood. But saloons were also coming under attack from reformers who pointed to alcohol as the root of social decay. In "Bottoms Up: The Socialist Fight for the Workingman's Saloon," Elizabeth Jozwiak discusses how Milwaukee's Social Democratic Party fought corruption and racism to defend the city's workingman's saloon from the hypocrisy of the middle class.

Take a photographic tour of La Crosse's 100-year-old artistic and architectural treasure in "Mary of the Angels Chapel: Artistic and Architectural Masterpiece" by Charish Badzinski.

And get a taste of two new Society offerings: the Toy Stories exhibit at the Wisconsin Historical Museum and a new book from Wisconsin Historical Society Press, Silver Screens: A Pictorial History of Milwaukee's Movie Theaters by Larry Widen and Judi Anderson.

The Wisconsin Magazine of History is a benefit of Wisconsin Historical Society membership. Individual issues are available at the Wisconsin Historical Museum's online store and at bookstores across the state. Don't miss an issue! Sign up for membership today!
