Celebrate Historic Preservation and Archaeology
The Wisconsin Historical Society encourages communities throughout Wisconsin to begin planning now for events and activities to celebrate Historic Preservation and Archaeology Month this coming May. During this monthlong celebration, many local and regional events are planned to promote historic and prehistoric places for the purposes of instilling community pride, promoting heritage tourism and showcasing the social and economic benefits of historic preservation.
An archaeologist records a centuries-old Native American site in western Wisconsin. Wisconsin's Historic Preservation and Archaeology Month offers limitless possibilities to highlight local historic and archaeological landmarks. Activities and events eligible for inclusion in Historic Preservation and Archaeology Month include everything from walking tours, a historic building open house and how-to workshops, to fund-raising kickoffs, historic marker dedications, and op-ed pieces on historic preservation in the local newspaper.
A sampling of last year's events in communities across Wisconsin included:
- "The Past Passed Here," a special weekend event featuring hands-on activities highlighting the historic sights and sounds of early Chippewa Falls
- A weekend-long restoration symposium in Mineral Point sponsored by the Mineral Point Living Arts Center and Pendarvis
- Free walking tours of the Astor neighborhood in Green Bay conducted by the Brown County Historical Society and Historic Hazelwood
- The Little Chute Historical Society's second annual cemetery walk at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church Cemetery
- An Indian mound tour in New Lisbon with Society archaeologists
- Lecture and book signing for Aztalan: Mysteries of an Ancient Indian Town in Oshkosh
- Volunteer archaeological field survey in La Crosse with the Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center
- "Dating the Schaefer Mammoth, Kennewick Man and Other Ice Age Sites," a public lecture by Dr. Thomas Stafford at the Kenosha Public Museum
- Archaeological and historic site bus tour sponsored by the Oconto County Historical Society
Do not miss the opportunity to join in this year's celebration! We can suggest more ideas for planning your event, but your community's special historic places will likely inspire unique ways to celebrate. If your community is not holding an event but would like to learn more about historic preservation, you can also schedule our free, 30-minute presentation, "Understanding Historic Preservation," for your community or organization.
To schedule a free presentation or to submit your Historic Preservation and Archaeology Month event to our event calendar, please contact us at the Wisconsin Historical Society, 816 State Street, Madison, WI 53706, by telephone at 608-264-6493 or via email.
