Philip Roth Classic Next Up in Book-Film Series

An image of Ali McGraw, who costarred with Richard Benjamin in the motion picture Goodbye, Columbus, adapted from the Philip Roth novel

What do you get when you cross a bookish boy from humble roots with a free-spirited girl from a wealthy family? Find out on Sunday, January 21, at 1:30 p.m. when the Society hosts a free screening and discussion of the 1969 film "Goodbye, Columbus," the next offering in the Classic Book and Movie Club. Philip Roth's novel of Jewish identity and assimilation in the suburbs of New York gets a spirited comic reading in this film, which marked the debut of actress Ali McGraw. McGraw plays a Jewish princess whose father has a made a fortune in plumbing supplies. Richard Benjamin, who went on to become an odd sex symbol of the 1970s, had just the right comic twist as the young man who can't overcome McGraw's middle-class morality with his sense of passion and romance. Jack Klugman plays her hard-driving and unyielding father.

The Wisconsin Historical Society, the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research, and The Capital Times proudly present this series of Hollywood movies adapted from classic books of the 19th and 20th centuries. Read the books, then see the movie — on the big screen! This cooperative film series draws upon the collections of the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research.

Professor Tom Schaub of the University of Wisconsin-Madison English department will moderate a discussion of the film and the book from which it was adapted. And don't worry if you haven't read Roth's book — reading the book is encouraged but not required.

Don't miss your chance to see this classic story come alive in the auditorium of the Wisconsin Historical Society! Admission is free on a first-come, first-serve basis.
