Now's the Time to Book History Day Camp Space
With signs of winter all around us, it may seem a bit early to begin planning for your kids' summer activities, but the staff who administer the history day camps at Old World Wisconsin and Wade House say now's the time to book space in the popular programs that begin in June. Old World Wisconsin, now in its fourth year of offering fun and educational day camps, presents parents with a choice of several five-day, daylong camp sessions and more abbreviated mini-camps. With themes ranging from Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House books, Civil War camp life and one-room schooling to working with farm animals and playing historic games, these day camps provide the perfect venue for kids to have a lot of fun while learning firsthand about Wisconsin history.
Wade House day campers pitch a Civil War camp tent
Wade House offers four sessions of day camps in two thematic programs that explore the lives and times of Wisconsin pioneers and the Civil War years on the Wisconsin home front. The pioneer program includes hands-on activities ranging from blacksmithing and woodworking to sewing and open-hearth cooking. The Civil War sessions engage kids in activities of that tumultuous time in American history. They'll get a taste of marching, cooking over an open fire, gardening and caring for the homestead, and — at camp's end — will celebrate the soldiers' homecoming with an outdoor picnic featuring period food, music and games.
