Historic Sites Celebrate the Arrival of Spring!
Just as the arrival of spring spurred a whirlwind of activity on 19th-century Wisconsin farms, it also means Wisconsin's historic sites are busy getting ready for the 2007 season. And that means many special events lie ahead that offer sites visitors unique opportunities for enjoying the spring weather and having fun exploring Wisconsin history. On Saturday, May 5, early risers and bird watchers may enjoy a stroll through the lush woods of Old World Wisconsin during the outdoor museum's Early Morning Bird Walk in the company of experienced ornithologists. If you're looking for a unique way of wishing that special someone a happy Mother's Day, consider booking a reservation for Old World Wisconsin's Mother's Day Buffet on Sunday, May 13. Another event, also at Old World Wisconsin, takes a historic look back at 19th-century Rituals of Spring on Saturday, May 19.
That same weekend marks the beginning of the 2007 performance season at Circus World, where you can expect to be dazzled by the return of the acrobats of Circus China, the ever-popular Elephant Encounters, a magic show, KidsWorld Circus, the antics of Eggroll the Clown, and — for the first time ever — daily behind-the-scenes tours of the buildings of Historic Ringlingville. Aside from the rollicking entertainment lineup, Circus World also offers circus fans a chance to browse a wide range of circus exhibits and an to take an up-close look at the world's largest collection of ornate, antique circus wagons.
Also on the weekend of May 19-20, Wade House kicks off the season with its first special event when it pays homage to time-honored trades during a Historic Trades Weekend. The 1860s stagecoach inn, which is also home to the authentically re-created Herrling Sawmill and the state's largest collection of carriages and working wagons at the Wesley Jung Carriage Museum, also offers some new entertainment fare in store. For the first time, the site will present a series of 1860s-style base ball games (yes, the sport was originally spelled as two words) beginning with the inaugural match up between the hometown Greenbush Dead Citys and Old World Wisconsin's own historic base ball team the Eagle Diamonds on Sunday, May 20. Old World Wisconsin will host its own Base Ball History Day on Saturday, June 16.
All told, Wisconsin's historic sites have more than 50 special events planned throughout the 2007 season. For complete details on these and other historic sites and their special events, visit the Wisconsin historic sites home page.
