Love and War: an Old World Wedding, 1917
A poignant moment in the romance of a young groom about to go overseas to fight in World War I and his soon-to-be bride will provide the setting for an Old World Wedding at Old World Wisconsin on Saturday, September 22. The year is 1917, and America has just entered The Great War. But back home in Wisconsin, love trumps warfare as the young man and his intended put thoughts of the looming conflict to rest and they prepare to celebrate their wedding day.
Two separate re-creations of the wedding preparations and the ceremony will give visitors an opportunity to take part in the events leading up to the wedding in St. Peter's Church and the festive reception to follow. The morning wedding festivities begin with pre-ceremony preparations at 10 a.m. as the bride, in a lovely silk period dress, and her family gather at home and the groom and his family wait at the church. The first of two wedding ceremonies begins at 11 a.m. The pre-ceremony preparations will be repeated at 1:30 p.m., with a second wedding ceremony at 2:30 p.m.
Besides the wedding reenactments, there's always a lot to see and do at Old World Wisconsin. You'll want to take some time to explore the museum and visit its many heirloom gardens. Trams are available to transport visitors throughout the outdoor museum's nearly 600 acres, and nature trails are available for those who would rather walk the site. And if all that exploring makes you hungry, the rustic, cafeteria-style Clausing Barn Restaurant offers an assortment of tasty food and drink.
