Preserving a Sense of Place
The Wisconsin Historical Society's Historic Preservation-Public History Division and the Wisconsin Council for Local History will hold joint annual conferences on Preserving a Sense of Place on Friday and Saturday, October 26-27, 2007, in Eau Claire. If you are active in your local historical society, an advocate for your community's historic landmarks, or perhaps both, this conference is a great opportunity to meet others with diverse interests and share strategies for the common goal of preserving community history. For a single registration fee, you can attend sessions in both the local history and historic preservation conferences, including:
- Considering Audience – Get ideas for designing programs and volunteer opportunities for multiple audiences and age levels.
- Public Relations – Learn approaches for creating a community appreciation of history and promoting historic preservation.
- Exhibit Development – Take a workshop at the Chippewa Valley Museum, where you'll learn how to plan exhibits using your community's stories and places.
- Identifying Community Assets – Learn how to identify your community's important historic buildings and incorporate them into community planning and development.
- Archaeology Exhibits 101 – Discover how to present Wisconsin's earliest history and artifacts.
- The Top Ten Ways to Mess Up a Historic Building – Get some lighthearted advice for avoiding the most common mistakes made by building owners
- Sessions on special topics of interest – These will include "Interpreting One-Room Schools" and "Baseball History and Heritage."
These sessions are just a sample of the full conference lineup. More information about these and other sessions is available on our Web site. Registration is $40 to attend Friday and Saturday or $25 to attend one day. The conference fee includes breakfast, lunch and admission to all sessions. Additional Friday activities include a bus tour of historic Eau Claire for $10 per person as well as a special dinner and tour at the Chippewa Valley Museum for $15 per person. Conference registration is open through October 10. The Plaza Hotel & Suites, the conference headquarters, is offering a reduced rate of $84 per night for conference attendees who make reservations by October 11.
