Private Soldiers — Now a Traveling Exhibit
The Wisconsin Historical Museum proudly presents an exhibit version of the Wisconsin Historical Society Press book, Private Soldiers: A Year in Iraq with a Wisconsin National Guard Unit. The exhibit showcases photographs and text provided by three members of the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 2-127th Infantry Battalion. This compelling firsthand documentation chronicles the battalion's year-long deployment from the unique perspective of the soldiers themselves. Through the candid prose of Captain Benjamin Buchholz of Brandon and the vivid camera work of Staff Sergeant Joseph Streeter of Madison and Lieutenant Nathan Olson of Columbus, Private Soldiers captures the experiences of these citizen soldiers from training and deployment on their unique mission to their return to homes, jobs and families. Their mission took them into the most dangerous regions of Iraq, where they withstood hundreds of attacks, saw dozens wounded, and lost three members killed in action. This exhibit honors Wisconsin's participants in the Iraq War and helps viewers understand the conflict's human side.
The Private Soldiers exhibit will be on display in the museum's first-floor program gallery from January 8 through March 8, 2008. Beginning in mid-March, the exhibit will be available to other museums, historical societies, schools and libraries throughout Wisconsin. Consisting of 18 2- by 3-foot framed panels, the show is ready to hang and is transported in three custom-made crates. Borrowers can reserve the exhibit for four-, six- or eight-week periods. The Wisconsin Historical Museum will not charge a rental fee for the show, but borrowers are responsible for shipping and insurance. For more information or to book the exhibit, contact Ann Koski.
The Private Soldiers exhibit is made possible through the generous support of Laurie Kelly Steffen and Pamela Kelly Mather.
