Historic House Museums Workshop March 10-11
The Wisconsin Historical Society, in collaboration with the Midwest Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, is offering a workshop targeted toward a broad audience of organizations that own and manage historic house museums and properties. "Beyond the Velvet Ropes: Successful House Museums for the 21st Century" will be held March 10-11, 2008, at the Jefferson Street Inn in Wausau. Participants in the one-and-a-half-day workshop will network with fellow museum stewards and interact with program experts to meet their challenges in new and groundbreaking ways.
The program features nationally recognized preservation experts and local authorities, providing their experience and insight about the most innovative ways to keep these treasures viable. Included in the comprehensive list of museum professionals contributing to the seminar are: Jim Vaughan, vice president of stewardship of historic sites, National Trust for Historic Preservation; Ann Koski, director of the Wisconsin Historical Museum; Michael Douglass, director of Villa Louis, Prairie du Chien; and Donna Ann Harris, principal, Heritage Consulting Inc. of Philadelphia, author of the newly released book, New Solutions for House Museums.
Registration for the event is $80, which includes refreshments, lunches, handout materials, a reception at the Marathon County Historical Society's Yawkey House, and a tour of the Fox Tail and Silver Fox Retreat. Advanced registration is recommended, as space is limited.
This workshop is sponsored by the Chicago-based Midwest Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit organization committed to providing leadership, education, and advocacy to save America's diverse historic places and revitalize communities. The Jeffris Family Foundation of Janesville, Wisconsin, an organization dedicated to preserving the cultural history and heritage of local Wisconsin communities, has generously underwritten this event.
