New Fourth-Grade Textbook Coming
Experience 10,000 years of Wisconsin history in the Society's first-ever, full-color textbook! Wisconsin: Our State, Our Story by Bobbie Malone and Kori Oberle is the definitive fourth-grade textbook, where students will encounter lively stories of the many people, groups and events that shaped our state's past. Wisconsin is only the second state in the nation to have a history textbook produced by the state's historical society — and who better to tell the story?
Personal and focused on the lives of regular people, not just politicians like Bob La Follette (though he's in there, too!) and famous generals, the book gets kids thinking about big historical questions like "How did people in the past view their world?" and "How did this action transform people's lives?"
The book is written to match the state's standards for what fourth-graders are expected to learn and is based on the "Thinking Like a Historian" teaching approach. This teaching strategy, developed by University of Wisconsin-Whitewater history professor Nikki Mandell and Bobbie Malone, director of the Society's office of school services, allows teachers to focus on history and help their students become independent, critical learners, all while having some fun, too. Pilot-tested and inquiry-driven, the book was developed in consultation with reading specialists, curriculum coordinators and teachers. A teacher's edition and student activity guide accompany the book.
Wisconsin: Our State, Our Story gives Wisconsin teachers everything they need — and more — to teach fourth-grade history!
