Team Wisconsin, Ready for Nationals
Forty-eight Wisconsin students who competed in the statewide finals of National History Day on May 3 will represent the Badger state at the national event in June in College Park, Maryland. Students came to the Wisconsin Historical Society headquarters in Madison to share their historical research with historians, educators and other young scholars as they competed for the opportunity to represent Wisconsin. The finalists emerged from a field of almost 7,500 students from 90 schools statewide.
National finalist Sophie Gerdes as Eva Perón, former first lady of Argentina Participating students have worked for months to create historical research projects related to the program's 2008 theme, "Conflict and Compromise in History." After selecting topics and completing extensive research, students presented their conclusions as documentaries, museum-style exhibits, dramatic performances, historical papers and Web sites. This year marks the first that Web sites will be eligible for the national event, though Wisconsin students have been making Web sites for the regional and state event for a few years now.
Participation in National History Day continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Check back in June to share in the adventures of Team Wisconsin by reading their online journal, just as Team Wisconsin 2007 did, as they present their projects to national judges and explore the Washington, D.C., area. Last year Cody Haro of Holmen made Wisconsin proud when he claimed first prize in the senior individual exhibit category at nationals.
Educators who would like more information on National History Day can find curriculum materials and contact information on the National History Day home page.
The Society congratulates all of the Wisconsin students who were involved in National History Day projects this year and wishes our finalists the best of luck!
