Wisconsin Students Head to National Finals

The National History Day state finalists who are representing Wisconsin in the national finals in College Park, Maryland, June 15-19

An enthusiastic group of Wisconsin's best and brightest middle and high school history students are in College Park, Maryland, this week to take part in the national finals of National History Day, culminating yearlong research projects designed to help the students learn how to conduct scholarly research using primary and secondary sources. And, throughout this week, you can read about their adventures in a daily blog written by the students themselves.

The students' journey to the national finals began when they emerged at the top in their categories of competition in the National History Day state finals in Madison on May 3. They worked throughout the year to create historical research projects related to the National History Day 2008 theme, Conflict and Compromise in History. After selecting topics and completing extensive research, students presented their conclusions as documentaries, museum-style exhibits, dramatic performances, historical papers and websites. Wisconsin's national finalists emerged from a field of almost 7,500 students from 90 schools across the state who participated in the program this year.
