Summer Fun at the Wisconsin Historical Museum

A graphic announcing the Wisconsin Historical Museum Summertime Fun program focusing on Wisconsin animals and insects

Engage children of all ages with the Wisconsin Historical Museum's Summertime Fun programs! As the summer season approaches, the museum education staff is getting geared up for the eighth annual Summertime Fun youth adventure series held at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Your child will learn how the past influences the present and future, while discovering how we play a role in our history.

The 2008 theme is Wisconsin Animals and Insects. Children will discover the past by listening to stories about Wisconsin wildlife and participating in a related craft. Each Wednesday in July museum storytellers will demonstrate to the children how to think like a historian through illuminating stories and assist in creating hands-on craft activities to take home. Crafts include creating a field guide to animal prints, sculpting an effigy mound, decorating a badger mask, painting a wooden butterfly, and folding origami critters.

Registration is recommended, but drop-ins are welcome. Sessions will last approximately an hour and a half and are offered each Wednesday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The cost is $5 per child, per session, for Wisconsin Historical Society members and $6 per child, per session, for non-members.

Following are this year's Summertime Fun sessions and their topics:

The Wisconsin Historical Museum, located on the Capitol Square in Madison, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking is available at the Dayton Street/Capitol parking ramp and at the Overture Center/Mifflin Street parking ramp.
