Regional Local History Conventions Coming Up

Tours of local landmarks like the 1892 Timm House in New Holstein are among the activities planned at regional local history conventions.

Each summer the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Council for Local History sponsor 10 regional local history conventions. These conventions provide opportunities to connect with local history colleagues and to gain knowledge through the sharing of ideas. Each convention features a roundtable session for exchanging information, seeking solutions, and reporting on the past year's successes. Regional conventions also provide participants with training opportunities. Most conventions will feature training in either collections management basics or volunteer development and management depending on the location.

The conventions also offer a chance to explore local history culture through presentations and tours. This summer two of our hosts have planned tours of recently rehabilitated National Register of Historic Places properties: the Timm House in New Holstein, shown here before (above) and after restoration, and the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts in Menomonie. Both projects received funding from the Jeffris Family Foundation.

You can find detailed schedules and registration forms for each regional convention as they become available on our Web site. Registration is open to the public so make plans now to attend the convention in your region or choose the one that best suits your schedule and interests.

The convention schedule begins July 12 and continues through September 13. The convention season culminates with the joint Local History and Historic Preservation Conference in Madison on September 26-27.
