Historic Sites to Feature Historic Fare

The word "history" probably evokes any number of stereotypical images in most people's minds — everything from classrooms and textbooks to rare museum artifacts. Food probably wouldn't be among the top images conjured up by the word, but two of Wisconsin's historic sites will put the focus squarely on historic fare prepared according to historic recipes, using the ingredients, tools and techniques in common use during the 19th century in a series of upcoming special events. In all cases, those who sign up for the events can expect to enjoy a hearty meal, followed by a tour, but not before they pitch in to help prepare the meals, employing historic food preparation practices.

Villa Louis in Prairie du Chien kicks off its fall food focus with Breakfast in a Victorian Kitchen on Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21, October 18-19, and November 1-2. Participants can expect to help prepare an authentic 1890s breakfast, including jellied omelette, bacon fried with sweet green peppers, fried Mississippi catfish, Saratoga potatoes, rice waffles with maple syrup, Wisconsin gem cakes, coffee and cocoa, and other sumptuous side dishes. Then, when all the food preparation is done, everyone will sit down at the table in the Villa Louis' authentically restored Victorian kitchen to enjoy the fruits of their labors. A behind-the-scenes tour of historic mansion will follow. Just follow the links above for complete details on times, costs, reservations and contact information.

On the opposite end of the state, Wade House in Greenbush will present a series of midday Harvest Dinners on three Saturdays, October 25, November 1, and November 8. Dinner guests can expect to take part in the meal preparations in the kitchen of the historic 1860s stagecoach inn before sitting down to enjoy the meal in the inn's dining room. A partial dinner menu includes squash soup, pork loin roast, red cabbage with apples, mashed turnips, bread pudding, cider and coffee. After clearing the table, Harvest Dinner participants will tour the historic inn. The links above will provide details about times, costs, reservations and contact information.
