Society to Take Part in Wisconsin Book Festival
The Wisconsin Book Festival, the state's largest celebration of writers, books and literacy, returns to Madison this weekend, October 15-19, for its sixth annual event. The Society will be there, too, providing venue space both and hosting many events and programs that highlight the remarkable authors and books published by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. Events will be held at both the Wisconsin Historical Museum on the Capitol Square, 30 North Carroll Street, and at the Society's headquarters, 816 State Street, on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.
Following are some book festival highlights:
- On Friday, October 17, authors Sheila Cohen, Bob Kann, Julia Pferdehirt and Stuart Stotts, authors of book in the Badger Biographies Series, will discuss the challenges and opportunities of writing books to engage young readers. The event will be held at 12:30 p.m. at Borders West, 3750 University Avenue.
- On Saturday, October 18, celebrate the Madison launch of Fill 'er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations with authors Jim Draeger and Mark Speltz. Stories, images, coffee and doughnuts, all served up in Madison's historic gas station, Parman's Super Service Station, 3502 Monroe Street, at 10 a.m.
- On Sunday, October 19, Jerry Apps, one of the Midwest's best-loved storytellers, shares the story of his own land in central Wisconsin with his new book, Old Farm: A History. The talk begins at noon in Promenade Hall at the Overture Center. Apps will also be conducting a special workshop on conducting your own land genealogy at the Wisconsin Historical Museum on Saturday, November 1. Registration is required by October 25.
- And finally, if you miss your chance to hear about Fill 'er Up on Saturday, you'll have another opportunity on Sunday, October 19, when authors Jim Draeger and Mark Speltz appear at the Wisconsin Historical Museum. The Wisconsin Public Television documentary of the same name will also be shown.
All featured books will be available for purchase at Wisconsin Book Festival events or from the Wisconsin Historical Museum Store.
