Historic Preservation and Archaeology Month
May is Historic Preservation and Archaeology Month, a time to showcase Wisconsin's diverse and unique heritage. Local historical societies, museums, public libraries and other institutions use this month-long celebration to highlight the important role historic preservation plays in protecting our state's past. The theme for this year's celebration is "This Place Matters," and you can find 45 ways to celebrate the places that matter to communities across Wisconsin in our online calendar.
A Variety of Events Planned Statewide
These are just a few examples of the events posted in our calendar. If there is an event in your community that you would like to share, there is still time. To submit your Historic Preservation and Archaeology Month event, please contact us at the Wisconsin Historical Society, 816 State Street, Madison, Wisconsin 53706, by telephone at 608-264-6493 or by email. You can also submit events using our online form.
Online Preservation Resources
You don't need an event to celebrate historic preservation month in your community. You can use our Architecture and History Inventory and our database of Wisconsin properties listed in the National Register of Historic Places to learn more about historic places in your community. The Society's Historic Preservation Office is always available to help you learn more about preserving Wisconsin's archaeological, architectural and historical legacy.
