Team Wisconsin, Ready for Nationals
Fifty Wisconsin students who competed in the statewide finals of National History Day on May 2 will represent the Badger state at the national event June 14-18 in College Park, Maryland. Students came to the Wisconsin Historical Society headquarters in Madison to share their historical research with historians, educators and other young scholars as they competed for the opportunity to represent Wisconsin in the nationals. The 50 finalists emerged from a field of more than 8,000 students and 109 schools statewide that took part in National History Day this year.
Participating students have worked for months to create historical research projects related to the program's 2009 theme, The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies. After selecting topics and completing extensive research, students presented their conclusions as documentaries, museum-style exhibits, dramatic performances, historical papers and websites.
Participation in National History Day continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Check back in June to share in the adventures of Team Wisconsin by reading their online journal, just as Team Wisconsin 2008 did, as they present their projects to national judges and explore the Washington, D.C., area.
Educators who would like more information on National History Day can find curriculum materials and contact information on the National History Day home page.
The Society congratulates all of the Wisconsin students who were involved in National History Day projects this year and wishes our finalists the best of luck!
