Breakfast in a Victorian Kitchen at Villa Louis

One of Villa Louis' historic cooks works with produce and eggs in the kitchen of the Victorian mansion

Nestled on the banks of the Mississippi River in Wisconsin's second oldest city, Prairie du Chien, the Villa Louis Victorian country estate provides a unique and authentic window to the rarified world of one wealthy family's day-to-day lives of luxury set against the backdrop of a rough-and-tumble pioneer town. And the documentation the Dousman family left behind detailing their everyday lives, right down to how they decorated their lavish home and the fare they dined on, makes the telling of their story unusually compelling.

Authentic 19th-Century Recipes, Tools and Techniques

Villa Louis staff will use authentic 19th-century recipes in re-creating Breakfast in a Victorian Kitchen on Saturday, May 23 and Saturday and Sunday, June 27-28, for a limited number of guests who will help prepare the meal using period tools and techniques before assembling in the historic Villa Louis kitchen to enjoy the fruits of their labors. Using local, fresh and seasonal produce, dairy goods and meats, the Villa Louis' historic cook will guide the preparation of an authentic and hearty Victorian breakfast. A typical menu might include jellied omelette, bacon fried with sweet green peppers, fried Mississippi catfish, Saratoga potatoes, rice waffles with maple syrup, Wisconsin gem cakes, coffee and cocoa, and other sumptuous side dishes.

After enjoying their repast, the breakfast guests will be treated to an in-depth, behind-the-scenes tour of the mansion, its outbuildings, its gardens and grounds, and the Fur Trade Museum. Cost of the Breakfast in a Victorian Kitchen event is $35 per person, and reservations are required. Call 608-326-2721 to make reservations.

If you cannot attend one of these May and June events, Villa Louis will hold more Breakfast in a Victorian Kitchen events in the fall — on two weekends, September 26-27 and October 17-18.
