Celebrate the Fourth — 19th-Century Style

A grand Independence Day parade begins at 1:30 p.m. in the 1870s Crossroads Village

For residents of small rural villages in 19th-century Wisconsin, the annual community Independence Day celebration marked the high point of every summer. At Old World Wisconsin, that same small-town spirit of excitement and patriotic pride will fill the air in the 1870s Crossroads Village on Saturday, July 4, as townsfolk and visitors alike celebrate an Old World Fourth of July. Visitors can expect to take part in a spectacle rooted in the traditions of rural Midwestern Americana.

Music, a Parade, Politicians and Games Galore

Music is a major part of the day's events. The Harmony Cornet Band will give a rousing concert, visitors will have the opportunity to join in an inspirational hymn sing, and a raucous and joyful barn dance for all to join in will be held late morning and midafternoon.

At 1:30 p.m. the grand Independence Day parade will begin. This parade features historic horse breeds, suffragettes, The Missing Link, the Goddess of Liberty and, of course, politicians of the day. The politicians alone underscore the similarities between today and the 1800s. The day continues with competitions of skill and chance for visitors, including a greased-pole climb, egg toss, croquet, sack and three-legged races, tug-o-war (winners vs. our oxen!) and much more. There will even be a cannon firing and a chance to sample that staple of summertime — old-fashioned lemonade.

Special guests will be re-enactors from the Civil War-era Company F 29th Infantry U.S.C.T., a unit that portrays the role of African-American soldiers in the Civil War. Guests can see their camp, learn about their weapons, and understand what the life of a soldier was like during the Civil War. Admission to the museum is free for veterans with proof of service.
