Odd Wisconsin Animals Make Summertime Fun
This summer engage kids' minds and help them discover how the past influences the present and future. This year's Summertime Fun activities at the Wisconsin Historical Museum are designed to do just that through stories rooted in Native American and local folklore. By participating in the Odd Wisconsin Animals summer programs, young children can hear fascinating tales from one of our expert storytellers and make a related craft to take home, all while their parents, grandparents or chaperones visit the Odd Wisconsin exhibit (though they're welcome to stick around and hear the stories and participate in crafts themselves). Summertime Fun at the museum is a great way to engage kids' minds this summer, and the whole family can get in on the fun and learning.
Tales Drawn from Legend and Lore
Here's a complete lineup of the museum's Summertime Fun programs throughout the month of July:
- The Hodag, Wednesday, July 1, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. — Learn about Rhinelander's mythical beast of the forest as the story of the Hodag's creation is shared. Then use your imagination to make a monster mask of your own.
- The Good Fisherman, Wednesday, July 8, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. — Hear the Native American-style fable of the woman who wanted to marry the best fisherman in the village (he turns out to be a bear). Afterwards you can create a diorama of a bear by a stream.
- Susie the Duck, Wednesday, July 15, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. — Learn the background of Lodi's unofficial mascot. Listen as the story unfolds about Susie the Duck's life. Complete the adventure by painting your own bobble-head Susie.
- Opichi the Robin, Wednesday, July 22, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. — Do you know how the robin came to be? Hear storytellers relate the legend of our state bird. Next paint and decorate a papier-mâché birdhouse for your own robin.
- Rascal the Raccoon, Wednesday, July 29, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. — Sterling North's famous pet comes alive as the story unfolds. See why Rascal is so special to Wisconsin, and make a pet raccoon of your own to take home.
Cost per youth is $6 for non-members, $5 for members and $4 each in groups of five or more participants. Sessions will last approximately 90 minutes and are appropriate for children ages 5-11. Please call 608-264-6557 to register or for more information. Drop-ins welcome.
