Connecting to the Past in Wausau October 9-10

Friday evening tours of the beautifully restored Yawkey House in Wausau are one of many offerings in the "Connecting to the Past" local history and historic preservation conference

Anyone with an interest or a working role in preserving history in its many forms should mark October 9-10 as red-letter dates on the calendar. A distinguished lineup of speakers with impressive credentials promises to make the Society's 2009 Local History and Historic Preservation Conference at The Plaza Hotel and Suites in Wausau Friday and Saturday, October 9-10, a big hit. There is still time to register for the conference, but registrations are due by Friday, September 18. This year's theme, Connecting to the Past, invites you to explore the many ways in which Wisconsin's local history and historic preservation groups connect with the past and with one another.

Presenters Offer Wide-Ranging Expertise

The conference includes 24 sessions with experts on topics ranging from archaeology and architecture to log buildings and opera houses. Eleven hands-on workshops will provide training in the care of textiles, archival management, oral history, skills for historic preservation commissioners and more. There will also be several sessions to promote healthy organizations with topics such as fundraising, board development, volunteer management and online communication. The $75 registration fee includes access to all these sessions as well as morning refreshments and lunch on Friday and Saturday. Discounted rates for one-day participation are available. The full conference schedule and registration information can be found on our website.

The conference will offer many opportunities for networking with colleagues. At lunch each day, participants can make new contacts while they enjoy informative presentations. During Friday's lunch, author and University of Wisconsin-Marathon County Assistant Professor of History Brett Barker will present ideas for commemorating the upcoming Civil War Sesquicentennial. Saturday's lunch will feature Robert C. Willging, a USDA wildlife biologist and author of On the Hunt: The History of Deer Hunting in Wisconsin, to discuss the influence of deer hunting in Wisconsin's history and culture. You can also register for a Friday afternoon walking tour of the Andrew Warren Historic District .

All conference goers are invited to meet at the beautifully restored Yawkey House, pictured above, for a Friday evening reception sponsored by the Wisconsin Historical Foundation. On Saturday morning we will offer the popular "Coffee and Conversation" session in which each table has an expert on hand to answer questions about popular topics and bring together participants with similar interests to exchange ideas.

Conference Participants Expected from Throughout Wisconsin

Last year more than 300 participants from 52 Wisconsin counties helped make the 2008 Madison conference a success. We hope everyone dedicated to preserving Wisconsin's heritage will join us in Wausau to discover more new ideas and opportunities at this year's conference.
